How to check whether gold is real and verify the hallmark
A practical guide to checking gold before buying: what to look for, how to read hallmark markings and when extra verification is worth it.
UpdatedApril 20, 2026
When people buy gold, they usually care about more than price alone. They want to know whether the gold is real, whether the hallmark is correct and whether the offer makes sense.
Even without advanced tools, a few smart checks can make your decision much more confident.
Start with the hallmark marking
Gold jewelry usually carries a hallmark such as 585, 750 or 999. That is the first thing most buyers look for.
Still, a number alone is not always enough. It should make sense alongside the seller’s explanation, the paperwork and the overall product logic.
Ask for the weight and estimate the price per gram
It helps to understand not only the total price but also the approximate cost per gram. That gives you a clearer view of how much of the price comes from metal value versus labor and design.
This simple check often reveals more than a short sales pitch.
Why color is not always a reliable test
Many people try to judge gold by color, but tone depends on the alloy mix. Real gold can appear richer, lighter or redder depending on the metals added to it.
So a different shade does not automatically mean low quality or fake gold.
When extra verification is worth it
- If the item is expensive and the purchase matters a lot to you
- If the seller cannot clearly explain the hallmark and weight
- If the price feels unusually low or inconsistent with the market
- If you are buying outside a trusted bank or reputable store
